The Fremantle Roundhouse

The Roundhouse in Fremantle is the oldest building in Western Australia. First built by convicts in 1831, it was used as a gaol through until 1886 when it became too small to hold all the prisoners and the Fremantle Prison was built as a replacement. After its use as a prison was finished it became a lock up for the police, was then used by the water police and then later handed over to the Fremantle Ports as a storage depot

Fremantle Prison

As more and more convicts arrived from England, the Roundhouse became too small. The Fremantle Prison was used as a maximum security facility up until 1991 and housed both male & female convicts. Prisoners were used in chain gangs to build most of the public buildings of Fremantle including The Roundhouse, The Prison, Town Hall and Fremantle Arts Centre.
