The historic maritime city of Fremantle is known for its well-preserved colonial architecture, lively arts, and food scenes – including a vibrant and varied breakfast scene. From top-flight fine dining to cheerful and casual, a restaurant or bistro will hit the spot, no matter what you’re craving.
To help you out, here are our picks for the top 10 breakfast spots in Fremantle.
Little French Nest
Little French Nest is located on the unassuming Point Street. A small, cosy place, it’s a classic French café soaked in Fremantle’s summer sun.
Inside, you’ll find their seasonal all-day menu that hits that sweet spot perfectly. Pair your morning coffee with delicious French brunch dishes, such as Pain Pardu (also known as French Toast), Eggs Benedict, and your choice of sweet or savoury crêpes. Prefer your breakfast on the go? Choose from one of the delectable pastries and croissants in the display cabinet, and explore Freo.
Good Things
16 Bannister Street, Fremantle
The second location for this iconic Mosman Park breakfast spot, Good Things in Fremantle, has its distinct personality. It’s effortlessly cool, with exposed brick walls, utilitarian seating out on the front footpath, and tables spread across two snug stories inside.
You can expect a warm greeting, attentive service, exceptional coffee, and a chilled, friendly vibe. The food is comforting and filling, with a selection of top-notch breakfast foods – including a wide selection of egg dishes, sourdough crumpets with salmon, and elevated avo toast.
The stand-out menu items for us are the diner-style hotcakes. Thick, pillowy hotcakes with whipped butter and maple syrup, served individually—yes, they’re that big. Or try the chili eggs. It’s a different way to start the day, served with a roti rather than bread and Korean chili sambal, coriander, crispy shallots, and bacon.
The Grumpy Sailor
21A/135 High Street Mall, Fremantle
The Grumpy Sailor is a staple of the Fremantle breakfast scene, and its current home still dishes out the good stuff. A friendly, relaxed space, it’s known for its down-to-earth service, uncomplicated food done well, and excellent coffee. It’s the perfect place for a laid-back breakfast in Fremantle.
You can find a range of tasty bagels and toasted sandwiches alongside classic breakfast fare, from a lighter muesli bowl to a hangover breakfast bagel stuffed full of bacon, egg, hash browns, cheese, and barbecue sauce.
If you’re after the best breakfast in Freo, The Grumpy Sailor is an excellent little spot to start the day in.
Best Wishes Coffee
Shop 9/2 Cantonment St, Fremantle
This seemingly small coffee shop tucked away on Cantonment Street, offers one of the best breakfasts in Freo. The bright glass windows shine light into the space inside, the friendly staff are always keen to chat while pouring some of the best coffee in Fremantle. The team also serves up a selection of scrumptious bagels, fresh pastries, and good music.
If you know, you know—and we highly recommend that you get to know Best Wishes.
Coccolicco
Coccolicco is one of Freo’s more interesting little eateries. What appears as a little one-room white brick box, nestled underneath a giant fig tree, you’d drive right past it if you didn’t know what you were looking for.
A fully stocked display cabinet greets you as you walk in. Inside, you’ll find an array of sandwiches, bagels, paninis, and mouthwatering baked goods. Coupled with killer coffee, it’s the perfect little place to soak up a morning with breakfast in Fremantle.
The Prestige Italian Café
7 Phillimore Street, Fremantle
The Prestige Italian Café is one of the newer names in Fremantle’s breakfast scene, having just opened its doors in December 2024. The name echoes the grandeur of cafés of yesteryear, while the crisp white walls, dark wood floors, and retro chairs and tables would feel more at home in a 90s classroom.
But that’s part of the charm. The coffee is spot-on, and you can enjoy a range of paninis on house-made bread, croissants, and other mouth-watering pastries baked fresh in-store every day.
Kerfuffle on the Corner
244 South Terrace, South Fremantle
Kerfuffle on the Corner is precisely what you want from a small, lazy coffee shop. As its name suggests, it’s situated on a quaint corner on South Terrace in the southern part of the city. The inside is adorned with local art, infusing the space with a vibrant and eclectic energy that mirrors the inventive menu, and there is outdoor seating at the front, giving patrons the choice to enjoy the arts inside or go outside and watch the world go by.
The team there slings excellent coffees, which partner with their selection of brekky bagels, croissants, or wraps. There are also beef or vegetarian empanadas for something a little different to start, or açaí bowls for those who prefer a lighter start to the day.
Flora & Fauna
3 Cantonment Street, Fremantle
After closing its doors in Northbridge, Flora & Fauna now calls Fremantle its home. The new Freo breakfast spot is more prominent, with polished wooden floorboards, exposed brick, gorgeous lighting, and the same signature coffee, mushroom tea, and matcha. Dive into delicious vegetarian and vegan food that will turn even the staunchest of meat eaters with some of the most beautiful plating you’ll see in Perth.
You can’t go past the sensational pancakes, which change seasonally – along with the rest of the menu. Or why not try something different and get one of their all-day menu items, like the nachos, for a cheeky little breakfast?
Bruce Town
259 Queen Victoria Street, North Fremantle
For a cozy, friendly coffee spot with tasty breakfast food and a great hot drinks offering, choose Bruce Town. This unpretentious café brings cool to the North Fremantle strip.
Browse their display cabinet full of muffins and pastries, or grab something on the cracking menu – we adore their range of baguettes and homemade muesli. There’s a modern twist on your classic muesli or something heavier like the Big Daddy Bruce, a good old-fashioned full breakfast fry-up.
Palette
1 Freeman Loop, North Fremantle
Palette has an enviable location directly across from Leighton Beach. The building boasts high, airy ceilings, a warm interior, and considerate staff.
The food is simple yet sophisticated. The spiced granola is a tasty choice, but we recommend you try the Turkish eggs. With enough chili kick to warm you the whole morning, it’s perfect for when you come in shivering after a morning swim.
Tired of coffee? The palette also offers a range of incredible matcha, juices, milkshakes, and more – the range is all Instagram-worthy and tempting enough for anyone looking to forgo their morning flat white.
