Dog beaches in Fremantle

Fremantle is a city by the water, with a range of exceptional beaches in close proximity. And, lucky for you, many of these are also dog beaches.

Leighton Beach

Location: Leighton Beach, North Fremantle

Leighton Beach in North Fremantle is one of Perth’s best-known dog beaches—and it’s within walking distance from Pier 21. Just north of the railway footbridge and extending up to South Cottesloe, the white sands and shallow waters are the perfect spot for you and your pooch to have a romp.

South Fremantle Dog Beach

Location: Marine Terrace, South Fremantle

South Fremantle Dog Beach makes for a nice trip away from the busier parts of the town. It’s smaller and quieter than Leighton Beach, making it easier to find a park, while still being a stunning piece of coastline that’s hugely popular with locals on the weekends.

North Coogee Beach

Location: 25 Rollinson Road, North Coogee

Just a little further south of South Fremantle you’ll find North Coogee. It tends to be a quieter beach, and dogs are allowed off-leash so you can relax and refresh by the water as your dog goes racing in the sand.

Dog-friendly cafes and restaurants in Fremantle

Let’s face it: as a dog owner, all the best cafes are dog-friendly aren’t they? And Fremantle has a wealth of cafes and restaurants where you can bring your dog, whether you’re grabbing an early morning breakfast or looking for a lazy lunch.

Tradewinds Hotel

Location: 1 Sewell St, East Fremantle

Opening hours: 11:30am to midnight, every day

Tradewinds Hotel is a fantastic place to sit back and relax with your best bud at your feet. Take in the river views from their spacious alfresco courtyard while enjoying a hearty breakfast or extended lunch – the restaurant is open every day from 6:30am ‘til late.

Third Wheel

Location: 408 South Terrace

Opening hours: 6:30am–2:00pm Monday to Friday, 7:30am–1:00pm weekends

Located close to South Beach, Third Wheel has a range of tasty toasties, great coffee, and a laid-back alfresco area for your dog to relax. It’s the perfect place to come after a run around at the beach.

Good Things Fremantle

Location: 16 Bannister Street

Opening hours: 7:00am–2:00pm every day

Good Things brings their scrumptious menu and love of dogs to the Fremantle strip. Sit out on the bench at the front and watch the world go by with some of the best coffee Fremantle has to offer.

Stretch your legs on the best dog-friendly trails in Fremantle

What would a trip to Fremantle be with your dog without a walk or three thrown in? You’ll both be spoilt for choice, with an abundance of dog-friendly trails in the area.

North Fremantle River and Beach Walk

Location: Burns Street, North Fremantle

The fun begins right outside Pier 21, with the North Fremantle River and Beach Walk which meanders right along the foreshore. The trail is even more handy in that it’s circular, so that instead of retracing your footsteps you’ll be able to enjoy new sights (and smells) along the way.

Rocky Bay Heritage Trail

Location: Burns Street, North Fremantle

Following some of the same sections as the North Fremantle trail, the Rocky Bay Heritage Trail meanders along the shore, right past Pier 21, taking you up and around the river along the cliffs of Rocky Bay.

Gilbert Fraser Reserve

Location: John Street, North Fremantle

Not a trail, but a dog-friendly park with high fencing, and wide open grassed spaces for them to run around and enjoy, Gilbert Fraser Reserve is the perfect off-lead park—conveniently located right next door to Pier 21.
